Olfactive Delights & Pure Pheromonal Joy

The perfect way to discover ambergris

In house slow maceration of high quality pure light-grey ambergris, shore collected, cured in vintage Sri Lankan Sandalwood oil. (S. album, distilled 2020).

Your bottles will contain a little bit of pure ambergris to keep the aging process alive.

Nose warning

Un nez averti en vaut deux

This attar is designed to showcase a pure ambergris experience, so it is deep but, past its opening, it is also very discrete : it does feel like a second skin aura more than anything else.

Ambergris is a fragrant fixative, and used for that purpose since antiquity. It is a pure base, yet it feels more "luminous" than "massive".

Past the complex opening and first wear cycle, it is useful to imagine something more like a natural quasi-molecular perfume ; one that enhances the skin with an almost ethereal fragrant glow rather than a fragrant bomb. Read more below for the full experience.

This is an introvert and intimate perfume... like the ocean: something to immerse and bask in.

For an ambergris-rich lush floral attar with strong projection and extrovert qualities, see our Rose des Vents

Scent profile

Grey ambergris is gently animalic, not in a musky way, it is more a kind of pheromonal presence inspired by a marine nymph (imagining a light version of the vivifying air when walking on rocks at low tide in a pristine ocean site).

The opening is very close to experiencing pure ambergris in its raw form: earthy, oceanic, marine, sweet, animalic and radiant; it has hints of tobacco and...

...sandalwood (which are there naturally, before being macerated in actual sandalwood). Because of their naturally shared traits, sandalwood makes the ideal canvas for  the ambergris to shine undistorted.

Bois d'Ambre is the perfect attar to provide the enjoyment of wearing ambergris in its essence, and own profile: a pheromonal joy that makes the skin smell magic.

This second skin ethereal fragrant glow, slightly sweet and salty is what the rest of the wearing experience feels like, which last for hours and hours, as both ambergris and sandalwood are fixatives.

It is precisely this radiating second skin aura much more than any specific note, that real ambergris brings to high end perfumes, and why it so sought after for its hypnotic charm.

To understand fully how this attar works while unfolding in longevity can take a bit of time. We recommend that you compare with parts of the body where the attar has not been applied, to see how it affects deeply and beautifully the areas where it is present, but in a quasi immaterial way (beyond which there is a lovely, but quite subtle olfactive experience).

Once you get tuned to it, it becomes hypnotic and (gently) addictive.

The Scentient experience:

Warm, lush, invigorating, introspective, grounding and sensual.

Becomes gentle with time, while retaining these traits.

The Art of Time

Bois d'ambre is an ode to the wonders of time. Grey ambergris takes decades to be formed (first in the whale, then floating on the ocean until reaches a shore, and then until collected.). When it is first produced, ambergris is a lump of dark brown gooey substance, and useless as a perfume ingredient – the smell is definitely much too strong and unrefined at that point (this is why one of the many good reasons that no one ever kills whales for ambergris).

As ambergris floats on the ocean, it solidifies and naturally undergoes a curing and aging process. Its fragrance develops, refines and matures, then, after a long time it becomes one of the most sought after ingredients of natural perfumery.

The kind of light grey ambergris we are using is rare. It is the kind that went the longest through this natural curing process floating on the ocean under the sun (and the storms). Its smell is deep but also with many subtle facets (younger ambergris is darker and its fragrance blunter, and much less nuanced / complex)

After being collected, and cleaned, it is prepped and then put to macerate for at least two years before release.
