In-house blend of vintage cured rose and young distillation (our own single estate production) in Sri Lankan vintage Sandalwood oil (distilled january 2018). It showcases both deeper honey notes of our vintage rose and the brighter and greener notes of the fresh distillation.

This blend is designed as per request from our customers who enjoy having a lighter everyday wear. For a more intense rose experience, our essential oil can be worn pure and lasts several hours.

Like for all our blends in the écrins collection, the sandalwood oil we choose is distilled form relatively younger trees (circa 25 years). Its role is to serve as a canvas for the other aromatics (here the rose) and offer them fixative poperties and a sandalwood presence. Sandalwood is not meant here to be the star of the show.

For people looking for a stronger sandalwood experience, we recommend using oils form our dedicated sandalwood oils ollection that are mentioned as such and either layer them with the rose or blend them according to personal taste (or aks us to prepare a bespoke blend).

We recommend you write to us if you are unsure of the best oil, or blend, for your purpose and that you order samples first to see if our offerings match your expectations.

Airy rose, disappointing sandalwood

This blend of rose oils and sandalwood oil, in my view, places a clear emphasis on the rose components. This is also reflected in its relatively thin consistency. Nevertheless, the intensity of the rose scent is rather moderate—almost restrained. In contrast to a classic rose attar obtained by co-distillation, it’s noticeable that both the rose note and the sandalwood content are weaker.

In this rose–sandalwood mixture, the rose scent is very delicate: fresh-floral, lightly peppery, with citrus accents. The rose reminds me somewhat of distilled rose oil from Rosa gallica. The overall impression is light, unobtrusive, airy, and ethereal.

I am a little disappointed with the sandalwood oil in this blend, as I had expected an intense, long-lasting sweet santalol note on the skin, like the ones I know from oils of this provenance. Yet here, the sandalwood oil is oddly inconspicuous and pale. I can’t detect the kind of enduring santalol base—still perceptible the next day—that I was hoping for. A pity.

Accordingly, my overall verdict is merely average. The enclosed sample of the sandalwood oil “Ganesha” would probably have been better suited for this project, as “Ganesha” exhibits exactly the long-lasting santalol base I was looking for.

Would I purchase or recommend the product again? No. That may also be because essential oils—and thus sandalwood and rose oils—have been part of my life for 40 years. Over that time, I’ve smelled a great deal and built up a certain level of expertise. Flowery product descriptions overflowing with superlatives leave me cold and increasingly serve as a warning signal.
