There are no temperature gauges or pressure valves, the diggadar monitors the process with his touch (temperature of the copper pot) and sound (of the vaporization)

Two main types of oils are produced this way. First, those called Ruh, literally meaning "the soul" (of the plant) : those are pure essential oils obtained with this method.

Then those called Attar (= perfume) which are distilled or co-distilled directly into a sandalwood oil base. Those can be single plants, often floral, whose volatile fractions are then preserved by the sandwlood oil, or complex co-distillations of many ingredients, sometimes in many succesive rounds over weeks for the most complex ones.

There are different definition of what an attar (and its linguistic variations, ittars, itrs) are or should be. The strict technical one refers to co-distillates of flowers, herbs, spices, resins and other natural materials such as baked soil into a sandalwood oil base, using hydrodistillation and traditional apparatus and techniques for distillation (and prepping of raw material).

In a wider sense, the word is simply synonym for perfumes in many parts of the world. It usually refers to perfume made 100% pure aromatics, no alcohol, and no carrier oil, but it is also used for about anything. Sometimes the word attar is synonym for "Pure essential oil", too.

India is a land enamored with smells. Some of their more ancient texts speak of and revere aromatics, incense is burnt virtually everyhere, it has its own very old tradition of natural perfumery, it is likely to be the place rose otto was first invented... but today mosty of the traditional know-how is disappearing, so technical and time consuming it is. A vast majority of aromatics or traditional attars (perfumes without alcohol) found in India today are poor quality, made with synthetics, many expensive oils are adulterated (not only in India, of course but definitely there on a grand scale too).

I lived and worked a few years in India in the past, which gave me the chance to build language skills and make excellent connections. I also love genuine Indian aromatics of high quality with passion. It is no big surprise then that I made a mission to curate a a series of them, all prepared with traditional methods and deg-bhapka distilled.

We also list genuine long-term cured traditionally produced vintage oils here (as well as in the Essentia collection) as the molecular transformation they undertook makes them unique and fitting this collectiom.

In India, attars are classified based on their perceived effect on the body. 'Warm' attars such as musk, amber and saffron are used in winter, as they are believed to increase body temperature. Likewise, cool ittars such as rose, jasmine, vetiver, etc. are used in summers for their perceived cooling effect on the body.

Although attars are mostly used as a perfume, they also have been used for centuries as medicinal and aphrodisiac purposes, this echoing the wider scope of uses for aromatics that is at the core of Scentient Nature's philosophy and practice.

You can also look at our "Ecrins - Precious aromatics shining in sandalwood oil" collection, as all items there qualify as attars, and some are definitely inspired by traditional formulas.

We offer some of these products in bulk and wholesale quantities.
